Peace Bridge Hotel / 3 stars / 70USD to 92USD per night |
The Peace Bridge Hotel is a modern'ish hotel in Ulaanbaatar, not quite in the city centre, about 25 minutes walk to Sukhbaatar Square, you can always get a cheap taxis however, it's not bad in its prestations, comfortable modern rooms, a variety of bars (including a strip bar) restaurants and small shops. It has a small business centre and some of the staff speak some English. Again popular with tour groups and the like. Not a first choice hotel but a respectable third choice if you have to.

The Continental Hotel / 2-3 stars / 80USD to 160USD per night |
The Continental Hotel was designed to look like a European Palace by someone who has never seen one. It is quite well located in the embassy district of Ulaanbaatar but sadly tries to be something which it isn't. A luxury hotel. It is a descent hotel, not too expensive and quite clean, the rooms are non-descript modern the lobby is dark and gloomy and the food not the best in town. It is never the less one of the favourite hotels of Ulaanbaatar as slightly cheaper than the big ones, is well situated and clean. Diplomats and well to do tourists are known to be staying from time to time. The service is very much like the rest of the building, they pretend well but have no substance behind it. A fun experience in keeping with the adventurous feel of Mongolia.

Sunjin Grand Hotel Room Prices from 109 USD to 248USD per night |
This brand new hotel is located closer to Russia then it is to Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by the Ger district of Ulaanbaatar it is not a recommended choice and only to be used if you intend on staying within the walls of the hotel. The inside of the hotel is a modern non-descript Asia luxury hotel, grand marble reception, receptionists who barely speak English, overpriced restaurant and most of the hotel is still shut off as not yet completed (true as of July 2007). It is possible that in a few decades the city will move to the surroundings of the hotel but at the moment it is too far to be attractive. The website is a little confusing for its own good, edging style over substance, and often missing out key information. It is never the less the most modern hotel in town and if you do value comfort and known quality then this might be a good choice. There is a bar in the lobby area which is also very expensive but some young Mongolians groups do come and play in the evenings. The hotel was built by Koreans for Koreans so predictably filled with busses of Korean tourists sporting golfing jumpers and Korean Air caps.

Edelweiss Hotel / 2 stars / 60USD to 182USD per night |
The Edelweiss Hotel is a small hotel near the Korean Embassy not too far from the Continental Hotel. It is one of the authors favourite hotels as it is clean, tidy, unpretentious, affordable and the staff is friendly. 5 to 10 minutes walk to Sukhbaatar Square. The hotel looks a bit like a German motorway motel and while it will not suprise you by its originality or comfort neither will it disapoint you. It is a simple hotel with simple prestations but in a sense it is better than the big hotels which are going to give you the same thing with more fuss and charge you more. The hotel is hard to find down little alley ways. The food is not memorable but rather edible with hearty breakfasts in the mornings.

Palace Hotel / 2 stars / 60USD to 98USD per night |
This hotel is located quite far from the city
centre (a good 30/40 minute walk). It is on the road from the airport to
the city located not far from the main stadium where the Nadaam games
take place every year in July. Absolutely nothing remarkable about it,
mediocre all around but does the trick if all you need is a bed and
everything else is full. Nothing in common with a Palace but popular
with the cheaper large tour groups can be a good option during the
games but otherwise to be avoided if it can be helped. One of the only
plus points this author could find about the hotel was that the
majority of the rooms were quite big and some are well appointed. So, in conclusion, this hotel is the polar opposite of what a palace should be like.

Chinggis (Ghenggis) Khan Hotel / 3 to 4 stars / 84USD to 190USD per night |

The Chinggis/Gengghis Khan hotel is the most modern hotel in Ulaanbaatar, excluding the Sinjun Grand, which doesn't really count. Located to the North of the city it is a good 20 minutes walk to Sukhbaatar Square and even further to the entertainment district of Seoul Street. It is never the less well appointed, if rather kitsch. The rooms are identical to millions of other hotel rooms around the world, as is the same story with most hotels. On the other side of the hotel you will find the Sky shopping centre which is one of the biggest supermarkets in Ulaanbaatar while inside of the hotel there will be such facilities as a Korean Air travel Desk, an Air Market travel desk, a depressing little cafe place, an ornate restaurant, a sparkly fountain water display and the small souvenir shops which are to be expected. The hotel is convenient for conferences and large groups as they have a lot of rooms. Service is neither good nor bad, just descent. The biggest drawback is indeed the location, crime, wind and pollution are high in winter while the roads are congested in summer.

The Bayangol Hotel / 3 stars - 82USD to 186USD per night |

One of the most popular hotels in UB, centrally located with relatively clean rooms, one of the betterchoices available. It is popular with the various consultants who come to Mongolia for a few months and popular with the tourists over the summer months. The rooms are not always in the best conditions and the building could do with a full refit but it is slowly improving and one of the very few descent, solid choices in the city. There is a good Indian restaurant in one of the towers called the 'Taj Mahal' Restaurant, the bar/restaurant on the ground floor level named Casablanca is popular with the miners and some of the expats, its serves the best hamburgers in town but also has chinese/singaporian food and some western dishes. Prices are expensive for what it offers but never the less reasonable considering this is practically as good as it gets!!!

The Ulaanbaatar Hotel / 3 to 4 stars - 74USD to 232USD per night |
The Ulaanbaatar Hotel is the oldest hotel in Mongolia and is supposedly the best. Well, yes, it might be the best but that's not to stay it is good. Very centrally located next to the Opera, a stone's throw from Sukhbaatar Square, this large block is not inviting by its architecture. It is only very recently that some of the rooms have been renovated and are now of "international" standard. The service is still feels socialist (not less due to the fact that there is a life size statue of Lenin in the forecourt) and the breakfast is not much to rejoice about but the rooms are large, most are of a good standard, the location are excellent and anyway it is all part of the experience.

The Puma Imperial Hotel / 3 stars - 60USD to 120USD per night |

The Puma Imperial Hotel is perfectly located next to Sukhbaatar square, and has one of the best Indian Restaurants in town (Delhi Darbar). The rooms are a bit dull and sparesly appointed but are clean and tidy. The hotel is definately in the top three recommended hotels in town. The staff are nice and often speak some form of English or another. The rates are amongst the most expensive in town along with the Bayangol and the Ulaanbaatar but they are worth it for the service you get. As a word of warning, the rates are substantially increased in the peak summer months, naturally, while service and quality are rather lower as they are overwhelmed. So keep an eye on that.
