Mongolia - Economy - Tourism

Tourism is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the Mongolian economy. While the traditional tourism season is relatively short (from May to October), the demand for tourism products in Mongolia is increasing every year as the country becomes more and more accessible. The great Nadaam games of 2006 have brought a big boost to the numbers of tourists to Mongolia while the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will also be a boost to the local tourist visitors. As the tourist dynamic change, less backpackers, more high net worth individuals the infrastructure needed to host the tourists is also changing with time, a Shangri Hotel and a Hilton hotel are currently under construction to serve this ever growing segment of industry.

A Government plan has been adopted for the development of the tourism industry through the year 2005. This involves plans to raise services to the world standard and extensive measures to increase tourist arrivals in Mongolia and to create attractive tour options. There are currently 219 tourism operators in the country. Untouched nature, magnificent wildlife, ancient history and the unique nomadic traditions and culture of the Mongols present a fabulous potential for the development of the Mongolian tourism industry, with special potential in eco-tourism, hunting and fishing.

The Government of Mongolia, jointly with the World Bank, is planning to organize the international Investor's Conference on Agriculture & Tourism sectors on 24-26 June, 1998 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to attract the potential investors in these industries of Mongolia. The investors seeking to invest in the above sectors of Mongolia are most welcome to participate in the event.
